I’m climbing a craggy hill comprised of post-art-festival, still-unpacking, traveling-this-weekend, where-did-I-put-the-coffee-mugs tundra. My muscle-memory wants to drive to the old address, reach for spoons in the drawer to the left, and recite the wrong zip code. But, there’s progress. And forward momentum, even in teaspoon measurements, can be a salve. I see the top of the hill, and there’s a chair under a tree and a cup of tea waiting there. And an easel, and some watercolors and a portrait in progress… Just a few more switchbacks…
This move from the desert to the coast has shed white-hot spotlights on my need for routine. Daily ritual. I’m not anywhere near a routine right now, and as a result, my mojo is whimpering beneath the boxes of books in the hallway. There is a quote from Ben Disraeli that I’ve pinned to the wall of my studio for years: “The secret to success is constancy of purpose.” I’m in dire need of some constancy. Know what I mean?

Imagination has brought mankind through the Dark Ages to its present state of civilization. Imagination led Columbus to discover America. Imagination led Franklin to discover electricity. Imagination has given us the steam engine, the telephone, the talking-machine and the automobile, for these things had to be dreamed of before they became realities. So I believe that dreams – day dreams, you know, with your eyes wide open and your brain-machinery whizzing – are likely to lead to the betterment of the world. Hang in there. There’s constancy within the caos of the ocean. Just watch it for awhile.
I’m still unpacking boxes from my move and haven’t gotten back into my routine/constancy of purpose. Almost there though and looking forward to it. At least for a while I don’t think I’ll be telling myself I’m in a rut. :-))
I’ve wondered what happened to you. We are very close to a move to the ocean ourselves although it will be east coast, not west coast. I’ve been looking forward to it and, at the same time, dreading it…….dreading not being able to find the flatware on the first try or the napkins I keep in the napkin drawer. And packing my art stuff is just plain overwhelming. I didn’t realize how much I had and how little I’m willing to throw overboard. Good luck and keep us up to date. I enjoy your musings……..
