My family and friends in New England are awfully sick of Winter. I see images on social media of more sleet and snow as I type this, despite a calendar that says Happy Spring! I feel guilty over here in southern California, wearing t-shirts and clipping roses for the studio, so I want to send a little shout of encouragement to everyone in the colder climates. Summer is coming, y’all! Hang tough, and think about bathing suits, swimming, painting watercolors outdoors and squinting in the sunshine! Really, it’s on the way!  And if peel-off-your-sweater sunlight hasn’t arrived yet, hunker down with your art supplies, and make summery images till you feel a little warmer. I’m sending imagination-particles of budding branches, sprouting gardens and sounds of birdsong in courtship in your direction. Mother Nature to the rescue! (Soon, very soon.)  😎

Art Quote

There is one rule which cannot be too firmly impressed on the student – namely – that in watercolor painting, the first colours should always be bright and pure, because they may easily be lowered to the desired tone; but if their purity is once sullied by admixture with other colours, their brightness can never be recovered.

  1. Hi Belinda, It was so warm out today I could sit and wipe off the dog’s muddy paws on the back porch. In Toronto
this could be followed by a rush of spring, and gardening decisions needing to be made so rapidly that everyone is in shock. I’m gearing up. Love this painting. So beautiful.

    XOXOXOXOXO Barbara

  2. Very good quote to allways remember! I am one of those who are waiting for summer. The best is yet to come! Lovely summerpainting to enjoy now when it is still cold in Sweden. Thank you! 🙂

    1. Hi Melanie, I just saw the April storm headed your way this morning, and I’m hopeful your art supplies are close at hand, and this will be the last snow of the season. Hang in there!
