Watercolor Idea
While working on a big painting in the studio, I had a small and quick watercolor urge! I grabbed a photo and some scrap watercolor paper, and took a break to make a very small watercolor painting. It was like a little cat nap for the size and scale segment in my brain. (It’s available in my Etsy shop.) Now, I am back at work on the big one, large brushes in hand, mixing flood-worthy puddles of pigments and water, trying not to drip & splash. But that petite watercolor was a breath of fresh air – just for the sake of “finishing” something.

Take a Break from the Big Stuff
Big work is great, but the long haul can be exhausting, so if you need a sense of accomplishment, paint yourself something tiny on a break. What’s the largest painting you’ve ever done?

I am so comfortable with doing small works, say, 6″ x 6″. I am trying now to go larger. I find that when I go larger I am looser and less patient. I have no idea why. I have a 30″ x 30″ canvas sitting in my studio (it has for months), just daring me to take it on! I am working up to it. I just did a 14″ x 14″ and it seemed large. I’ve done a touch larger than that, but only once or twice. A long time ago I started a 24″ x 36″ of pears that is still unfinished! I hadn’t yet got in the habit of working small when I started it. Sigh.
