Painting at the Train Station 6.5×10 watercolor on paper

A few years ago, I went plein air painting with some pros here in Southern California. Instead of painting the train station, I painted the painters.  My friends, R.E and E.D. were setting up their easels and an umbrella in the shade on a parched, hot day, and they both cranked out excellent paintings of the train station in just a few hours. I admire plein air painters; they brave the wind, bugs, the extreme temperatures, and the passers-by, all while chasing moving light, shifting color and skittering shadows. It really is a difficult thing to master. But when done well, plein air paintings are something to behold.  Who do you admire that paints plein air? Share in the comments, with a link if you have one, because we love being introduced to new artists.

We have a winner of this groovy printmaking book
As promised in this post, I tossed all of your names from comments and emails into a hat last night, and had my assistant select a winner. Scout the-studio-cat loves to swat and bite little scraps of paper, so I didn’t have to ask him to pick a name. He just dove right into the hat, and then let me extract the slightly chewed winner’s name without a protest.
Congratulations James Chase! 🙂

Thanks so much for playing, everyone! Next up: a printmaking DVD to give away. Stay tuned!

Art Quote

The best thing for being sad is to learn something. That’s the only thing that never fails…  the only thing the mind can never exhaust, never alienate, never be tortured by, never fear or distrust, and never dream of regretting. Learning is the only thing for you. Look what a lot of things there are to learn.
