Kitchen Counter Sun Dial 18×24 Monotype & Pastel

This is the last piece prepared for my Two-Person exhibit at Gale’s Restaurant in Pasadena, CA with my lovely, good friend Laura Wambsgans.  Between us, we’ve got 40 pieces of original art, displayed all over the restaurant, and it looks fantastic. If you’re in the area, please stop in for a glass of wine and a hello – I’d *love* to meet some of you who I’ve only corresponded with via emails and blog comments. The Artists’ Reception is a week from Sunday – on July 29th from 4-6:00pm.  Details are in this email-announcement – sent to my mailing list.

I’ve been reading about Degas and his use of pastel over monotypes (love this book: Degas and the Art of Japan), so I was inspired to use pastel over the Kitchen Counter Sun Dial, rather than my usual – watercolor or colored pencil over monotypes.  Here is the print (below), still wet and being pulled after a trip through the press. You can see that I changed the color temperature with the pastels, and added some detail to the foreground shadows and reflections, which is always great fun.

Art Quote
One must do the same subject over again ten times, a hundred times. In art nothing must resemble an accident, not even movement.

  1. Incredibly beautiful work, and congratulations on your show. I’m on holiday in Nova Scotia now and finding it hard to get to the net to comment. We don’t have internet in our schoolhouse. I love the technique. You are awesome.
