Here’s a video you can watch, or just listen to while you’re working on something else…

Richard Ormond is the former Director of London’s National Maritime Museum and the former Deputy Director of London’s National Portrait Gallery.

He is also one of the world’s leading authorities on John Singer Sargent, who was his great Uncle.

Ormond has published at least 9 volumes on Singer Sargent’s work.

He spoke at The Art League in Virginia on November 5, 2015, and lucky for us, they posted the hour and twenty minute lecture on youtube, so you can listen and watch it too.

Artist extraordinaire Robert Liberace introduces him:

If there are other good video lectures on art that you know about, please share the links in the comments so we can check them out. I love this sort of inspiration, and it’s easy to work on something else with your hands while tuning in to listen.

Thanks for stopping in, and have a great week!

Art Quote

Naples is simply superb and I spent a delightful week there. Of course it was very hot, and one generally feels used up. It is in fact that in Naples they eke out their wine with spirits and drugs, so that a glass of wine and water at a meal will make a man feel drunk. I had to take bad beer in order not to feel good-for-nothing. I could not sleep at night. In the afternoon I would smoke a cigarette in an armchair or on my bed and at five o’clock wake up suddenly from a deep sleep of several hours. Then lie awake all night and quarrel with the mosquitoes, fleas and all the imaginable beasts. I am frightfully bitten from head to foot. Otherwise Italy is all that one can dream for beauty and charm.

  1. Love the painting. I was working a show when I was in Italy in October, and my husband and I barely drink.
One half glass of wine per meal is a lot for us. But at every restaurant we were offered champagne before the meal, and a surprise liqueur at the meal’s end. I did find myself longing to nap in the afternoon, and wide away at night.
Love the Sargent lecture, and the show on Sargent at the Met in September.

    XOXOXOXOXO Barbara

    1. Hi Barbara! I love the idea of a surprise liqueur after each meal! That’s so Italian! (My Italian grandfather’s liquor cabinet and glass decanters were a thing of sparkly mystery to me as a kid.) And bravo to you for seeing the Sargent exhibit at the Met! I wish I had gone, but I sure enjoyed all the photos fellow artists posted on social media as a salve to my disappointment. Thanks for visiting! xoxoxoxo

    1. Hi pelchaktsel, Thanks for the link, and the reminder about David’s series. I subscribe to his channel, but hadn’t yet configured my subscription to notify me of new episodes, so I had no idea he’d posted so many. I just re-watched his episode on tracing digitally, and it was amazing, as all his videos are. I’m grateful that he’s documenting his process for all of posterity. Thanks for writing!
