Happy November to you! Is it cool and Autumnal where you are? Has the air around your home got a crisp, bright, squinty light that signals the official arrival of Fall? Does the chilly atmosphere make you reach for a sweater, a mug of hot apple cider, and a table strewn with art supplies, buffered by a few hours of time? Yes? Me too.

I’m listening to an audio book while I “rake-the-leaves” of my work space with a bit of Fall Cleaning. I think it’s a good habit to donate art supplies to a local high school, and it’s time for me to clear space & fill a box. My rule is this: anything I haven’t used for a year has to go. It keeps the clutter from mildewing my inspired moments, and prohibits the weighing down of my limited make-stuff surfaces.

It’s a good idea to take notes in a sketchbook while sorting and cleaning, because the purge leads to discoveries of  yet-to-be-started projects, and ideas tucked under unfinished drawings. For example, I wanted to make a video for my youtube channel about playing with watercolor; no set image, no under drawing, no goals beyond acquaintanceship: dropping color into wet color, layering pigments, splashing color-wheel opposites into big, bold washes, etc. I hear from so many people who would looooove to try watercolor, but they’re too intimidated to get started. Would it be too challenging to simply make a blind date with pigment, brushes, paper and water? Would dabbling in cobalt blues and persimmon reds and violet purples on a big sheet of paper with no plans whatsoever make you tense, or would it be candy for your eyes, and a deep breath of ♥goodness♥ in your art-making heart? I’m betting watercolor doodling would dispatch 30 minutes of fun, and I’d like to chaperone that date with a video tutorial. What do you think? Should I film it?

There are only two days in the year that nothing can be done. One is called Yesterday and the other is called Tomorrow. Today is the right day to Love, Believe, Do and mostly Live.

  1. I think it is a great idea and just what I need as encouragement to get off my behind and just do it! Thanks Belinda!

  2. By the way, I LOVE the pen-and-ink sketches done from photographs in the Instagram slide show below. A little video about how you do them would be such fun. For those of us new to sketching people, a photo seems like a more cooperative and maybe less intimidating subject than a live model!

Oh Yeah…..let’s doodle….fun and play is so good for us all and we forget to do it! Thanks Belinda

  4. I second that motion! For a lot of us, the seriousness of life (or so we perceive it to be) makes us forget how to just play!! By the way, LOVE your quotes!

  5. Definitely make that video! Who couldn’t use 30 minutes of doodling fun with colour! Especially on a grey autumn day!
