Some of my family members are more reluctant to model for paintings than others, so I’ve learned to be stealthy with my camera. The shutter click sound on my cell phone camera is turned off, and most of the time, I can participate in conversation while surreptitiously framing, focusing and capturing my subjects. They’re usually not aware that they’ve been harvested as my latest studio fodder, until they see the resulting art.   😆 This little painting sprouted from just such an occasion, while having Sunday morning coffee and reading with my husband. We’ve long since moved from that house, so these images are like pictorial chapters in the book of our history together. There is an enormous pleasure in painting the people and places I love, so I think I’ll continue my sneaky photo-snapping practices.

Do you use family as candid models in your art?

Art Quote

You must not fear, hold back, count or be a miser with your thoughts and feelings. It is also true that creation comes from an overflow, so you have to learn to intake, to imbibe, to nourish yourself and not be afraid of fullness. The fullness is like a tidal wave which then carries you, sweeps you into experience and into writing. Permit yourself to flow and overflow, allow for the rise in temperature, all the expansions and intensifications. Something is always born of excess: great art was born of great terrors, great loneliness, great inhibitions, instabilities, and it always balances them.

  1. Hi Belinda,
The cellphone is a great help in this process. I do love painting my family, and
I love your description. Wonderful painting.
